What are the advantages of staying in Ayrshire ?

Ayrshire is an excellent base from which to travel around central and southern Scotland, with excellent road, rail, sea and air links. A number of sea crossing terminals in Ardrossan, Troon, Largs and Wemyss Bay provide regular transport to the smaller Islands such as Millport, Bute and Arran as well as direct transportation to Ireland.

What can I see when I am there ?

Ayrshire has something for everyone. The following are links to some attractions and other organisations offering more information for the traveller. This is only a small sample of the delights of the area.

The Magnum Leisure Center. Harbourside. Irvine. Sports, leisure and cinema complex catering for everyone. Softplay, swimming pools, badminton, fitness suite, squash etc. Often the venue for live concert performances.

The Big Idea Inventor Centre. Located in the Harbour area close to the Magnum Leisure Centre, the Big Idea was officially opened early in 2000 and has already attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the area..

The Scottish Maritime Museum. Dedicated to the preservation of Scottish maritime history, with an open air Museum where visitors can view and board some of the exhibits and restored vessels in the Museums care

The Glasgow Vennel Museum. The Glasgow Vennel Museum has a reputation for exciting and varied exhibitions. The Heckling Shop behind it is where Robert Burns spent part of his youth learning the trade of flax dressing. In addition to an audio visual program on Burns there is a reconstruction of his lodgings.

Add to all of this the rolling Ayrshire landscape, scattered with numerous Castles, Stately Homes, miles of beaches and beautiful parks and walks - you have the perfect destination for a family holiday and a wonderful place to live and work.

For a selection of some of the Folk and traditional festivals in Ayrshire, check the Festivals page.

What is the weather really like ?

The warm waters of the Gulf Steam, ensures that Ayrshire enjoys a fairly temperate climate. (Apparently!!)

However, the Scottish weather is notoriously fickle. If you plan to travel out-with our Summer months, bring wellies and a raincoat.
